SECOND BEST chapter 20

Keegan left for work in deep thought. Tamara had stated her point loud and clear that he had a choice to make. However, this did not stop him from wanting to know if the child was his. But how would he go about it knowing he would lose his wife?

It was a beautiful morning in Kela's world, very beautiful that she was welcomed with roses on her desk and a box of her favourite chocolate.

Kela wondered who would pull off such a kind gesture as she sat on her chair. The bouquet of roses had no note attached but something clicked. It had to be Troy.. She thought. Kela couldn't think of anybody who could have been that kind except Troy, well Keegan too but he obviously would be looking for trouble by doing so.

Picking her receiver, she took a deep sigh and dialed Selina's extension.

"Halo.."

"Hi Selina, did you deliver the flowers on my desk?" Kela asked.

Selina quickly remembered Troy had passed earlier with a gift bag and did not mention where he was taking it.

"No.. It must be Troy" Selina responded.

"OK ask him to come to my office.." Kela said before hanging up.

Selina was really mad as she hurried to the garage in search of Troy.

Troy was seated comfortably and filling his mileage sheet when Selina knocked on his Window.

"Hey" Troy said after lowering the window.

"Troy where did those flowers come from? I mean the ones you delivered in Kela's office" Selina said Angrily

"What do you mean where did they come from? From me of course." Troy said before he continued filling his sheet.

"Am invisible to you aren't I?" Selina asked

Troy put his form away and looked at Selina who was looking depressed.

"Can we have dinner tonight?" Troy asked.

Selina knew Troy was just being kind but  he really thought she was a pest. What exactly would it take for him to fall in love with her?. As much as she felt cheap, it was this or nothing.

"Yes.. Dinner is fine" she smiled.

"By the way Kela wants to see you" she said.

Troy locked up and walked hand in hand with Troy as they headed back to the office.

"you called for me?"

"Yes Troy I did please take a sit" Kela said.

Troy settled and looked at Kela attentively.

"I'm told you delivered the roses.. Who brought them?" Kela asked as she poured herself some tea

"I did" Troy responded.

Kela chocked on her tea and ended up spilling some on her dress

"I'm sorry are you OK?" Troy panicked.

Kela cleared her throat while Troy picked a tea towel and wiped Kela's desk.

"Its fine don't worry let me have that" Kela said as she got the cloth from Troy and started wiping herself.

Troy observed her as she gently wiped her hands and their eyes finally met.

"Troy what's with all the kind gestures?" Kela asked as she looked him straight in the eyes.

"I'm just concerned, you no longer get flowers or chocolates. Thought I care a little. Things are not the same between you and him right?"

"He's married.." Kela said as tears lingered in her eyes.

Troy showed not much expression as he waited for her to finish.

" so you know... Being second best.... You can't demand for much" Kela said.

"Did you always know this?" Troy asked calmly as he sat upright.

"No.. I discovered late but I was foolish..."

"No no no no... Don't you ever call yourself foolish. Because you are not foolish" Troy interrupted.

"I believed in his lies... Look Troy I shouldn't be telling you this... Thanks for the flowers" Kela said as she got up.

"Where are you going?" Troy asked.

"To the bathroom... You do that a lot.... When you're pregnant" Kela said.

"I will see you later Troy.. You can get to work" Kela said.

Troy walked out of  the office and he stopped by the reception to talk to Selina before he proceeded outside.

After work Kela drove home with some difficulty as she was quite tired and she went straight to sleep.

Meanwhile, Keegan and Selina headed out for dinner after work.

"I did not know you had such great taste" Selina  said excitedly as the arrived at the southern sun hotel for dinner.

It may have sounded like a compliment but what she actually meant was she had no idea Troy could afford it.

"Well thanks so what would you like to have?" Troy asked with a smile.

Selina was polite enough to let Troy decide what they would have, at the back of her mind she was trying not to blow his budget.

The food was served just in time for Troy to start his well prepared speech.

"You look beautiful tonight.." Troy complimented

"Awww thanks and you are very handsome... Very very handsome" Selina said.

"Thanks... Selina.. I wanted to talk to you about something" Troy started.

Selina put her cutlery down and looked at Troy.

"No go on... Don't worry. Go on eating in fact let's talk while eating.
shall we?" Keegan smiled as he picked his cutlery.

Selina was excited inside, could this be the long awaited proposal? Was he finally ready to date her?.

"Selina.. I think you are a very beautiful woman and very intelligent. You're a great cook too" Troy said.

Selina was blushing and she thanked Troy for the beautiful compliment.

"You're everything every man would want and I am blessed to have you. I really am..." Troy said.

"Aww.. Thanks and you are just all I need. You're truly the best man for me"

Troy put his cutlery and pulled a straight face.

"But theirs just one thing.." He said.

"What?" Selina asked as her eyes widened.

"I m not in love with you Selina.. If it was a matter of forcing my heart to love you, I would have done so but  I can't even force it at this point. My heart already loves someone else" Troy said.

"What?.. What are you talking about? I thought this dinner was..."

"Yes it was meant to be everything you wanted but I'm sorry Selina... I know you really like me but I just can't force my heart to love you and I can't drag you along I'm just not the type of man" Troy said.

"Troy... I don't like you .  I love you.... And who is this woman? I hope its not Kela because I will be very disappointed in you. Kela is pregnant for another man. Doesn't that even matter to you???" Selina said angrily.

She was shaking and her heart was racing as she couldn't bear the shame.

"I'm truly sorry Selina.. I really am sorry I hope you understand" Troy said.

"You are sorry? Really Troy sorry??. Just that? Do you know she was sleeping with a married man?"

"I know... I do. But just in case you missed the point, I said i love her not the other way round and not that we have anything going on... No. Yes I love her and all I need is just time to forget her because I know we do not stand a chance together" Troy responded.

Selina was shocked and she looked at troy with disgust.

"I can make you forget her.." Selina said

"That's not the point Selina.. I just don't want you being foolish all because of me. You deserve better" Troy said.

"And you think she doesn't? Oh.... So you really think her getting pregnant has made ere loser her standards and date you? Troy she didn't want you when she wasn't and I'm sure she doesn't want you now" Selina yelled

"And I don't care" Troy responded

"You are a fool Troy... You're reall a fool" she said.

" no... Its love that is foolish. Finish your food, its getting late" he calmly replied.

When Selina got home her heart was heavy and she cried bitterly. Why on earth did she allow a man of Troy's calibre to make her feel that way. Why? And why did Kela have a hold on Troy? Why would she have all the good things?

Selina hated herself for scooping so low as to plead for a man but she hated Kela more. She called out every curse she could think of on Kela and she wished Kela could have a miserable life.

It had been two weeks since Mrs Kalenga confronted her husband and she said nothing much to him after that. However, she was always dressed happily in the morning as she went for work and made sure to carry out all her wifely duties with a smile. This hurt Keegan badly and his pride kept eating him up but he just couldn't say sorry.

It was women's day and Keegan had completely forgotten until he got to his office.

Mrs Kalenga made no mention of it and this was rather strange as she always reminded him to get her something in the past.

Without hesitating, Keegan rushed to the supermarket to get a cake for his wife, he hoped this would be a start of a good page in their relationship.

Kela had equally just left home to pick up a cake she ordered for Kutemba to appreciate her for being such a wonderful sister.

Well like fate had it, Mrs Kalenga had equally planned to get herself a cake for women's day and she left home heading to the bakery. On her way she realised how much traffic would be there and how many people would have booked cakes in advance so she drove to the  supermarket instead.

Mrs Kalenga did not have a care in the world as she sang along to the beautiful music in her car. She had put Keegan in his place weeks ago and now she left it to God while she enjoyed being a fulfilled woman. She also knew Keegan very well and she had noticed his apologetic attitude although he never said it. Well, he would eventually.. She thought.

Kela walked into the supermarket and just before she could go to the bakery section, Keegan called out to her.

"Oh my God.. What does he want?" Kela said as her legs became heavy and she felt her baby turn in her womb.

"Kela please don't be mad.. How are you..."

"Keegan what do you want?" She calmly replied.

"Oh ... My tummy hurts i need to sit" Kela said as she walked away from him and found a spot to sit.

Keegan quickly rushed to pull a chair for her and she sat down as she held her belly.

"Are you OK?.."

"Yes I'm fine... Keegan go away.." Kela said.

Kela's tummy had a sharp pain and she rubbed it as her face showed her anguish.

"Please tell me if theirs anything I can do..." Keegan said.

"Get me water..."

Keegan dashed away and quickly returned with some bottled water and a fruit salad.

"Thank you Keegan.. Now please go because I don't want trouble"

Before Keegan could even respond he noticed Kela's face stare in one direction and she began to panic.

"What is it?" He turned.

Mrs Kalenga had already arrived and she pulled a seat next to Keegan and sat down.

Kela got up trying to leave but Mrs Kalenga commanded her to sit down. Avoiding the embarrassment of being called prostitute, Kela obeyed and sat down.

"Madam God is my witness this isn't what it seems..." Kela said.

"No doubt aside yourselves God has been your only witness" Mrs Kalenga replied angrily.

"Baby let's go.." Keegan said to his wife.

"Keegan don't.. Don't touch me" she warned.

"Now both of you start talking.." Mrs Kalenga said.

"Baby... Please.. Let's settle this at home"

"Keegan I said don't touch me... If you don't start talking right this minute I can rest assure you all the broadcasting stations in this country will be talking about this incident tonight.." Mrs Kalenga said angrily.
