 RENTED LIFE 15

“Aaliyah, I do not have all day… I am working, did something happen?” Simon asked anxiously.

With a heavy sigh Aaliyah wonder if Simon would ever care enough to at least look at her the way she looked at him.

“Are we still friends?”

Simon chuckled

“What? Did I say anything wrong? What did I do?” Aaliyah asked disappointedly

“No you did not, it’s just early in the morning and I’m wondering what might have happened. Is Kuni okay?”

“Kuni is fine, I wanted to just tell you that she is attending an interview right now… so found her a job in makeni”

“You found her a job? I mean that’s great and I hope that goes well but I am just wondering how this will affect our plans” Simon said.

Simon leaned back in his office chair as he digested what Aaliyah was saying.

“Simon that’s the other thing…” Aliyah said

“What?”

“Simon, Kuni is my friend, I don’t want to go ahead with this. We have been friends for a while now and I have always counted on her, I cannot put her through this game. We spoke Simon and I think she genuinely trusts you and she is so naïve. I cannot live with myself knowing she trusts us both this much and this might break her”

Simon sighed heavily before asking Aaliyah to stop talking.

“Aaliyah where are you?”

“I am in makeni waiting for Kuni, she is doing her interview”

“Can I see you after this? Can we talk?”

“Simon there’s nothing to talk about…” she interrupted.

Simon helplessly begged her to talk but Aaliyah insisted she did not want to press the issue further before hanging up. Simon attempted to call back but Aaliyah’s phone was off. With a lot of disappointment, he stormed out of his office to try head to the nearest supermarket to grab a cigarette. Simon did not actually smoke but had since been developing the habit due to excessive stress from the company whose shares were depreciating. His parents had trusted him with their life’s savings in the company but he was failing them and so much had been giving him anxiety but for the first time something had been a perfect destruction. Kuni was heaven sent, she was calm, soft spoke and beautiful. Kuni brought Simon into a place of focus on things that mattered in life and he was beginning to be addicted to her presence.

While he sat in the car sweating profoundly and smoking on the last cigarette of the three, Simon knew he needed to talk to his parents. However, he could not admit that he was failing and he needed help. The company would have performed fairly well if not for his absence and careless lifestyle. Simon had little time for the company, he was out hopping from one lady to the next and partying every night away. There was still hope to revamp it all but not just before his parents would visit. It would take a miracle.

“I cannot do this, I am a failure. I am a disgrace”

Kuni was overwhelmed with emotion when the team of 6 interviewers came to a conclusive decision that she was a great fit for the school and they offered her a job instantly. It was really a dream come true. Kuni was offered a handsome pay, an apartment and a settling allowance. She rushed to the car to talk to her friend Aaliyah who she found weeping.

“Is everything okay sis?” She asked worriedly

Aaliyah was overwhelmed with emotion that she did not realize Kuni was headed back. So many emotions struck at once when she hang up on Simon, it was clear her heart had grown to love him and long for him. However, it was clear Simon was in a different picture.

“I.. uhmmm … I’m okay” Aaliyah said quickly wiping her tears and adjusting her seat.

“ did something happen? Please tell me sis…”

“No, not really… well I was feeling an overwhelming of emotions just now. It’s really silly boyfriend drama but that’s the least of my worries right now. How did it go my love?"
