GETTING THEM 20

GETTING THEM 20

Dinner was served and to go with it was a bottle of wine; I knew I had to go easy on the wine especially because I was never really a drinker. I enjoyed the pasta I ordered why Austin had something complicated only he understood, all I remember was there was pasta and something else quite complicated. The view was great as our room overlooked the lake, I could have not have asked for anything better. The cool breeze which reached us was amazingly soothing; we were both entangled in this special moment that we could have given anything for it not to end. Austin suddenly started showing some nerves and I feared he was going to say something I would not like. However, I kept calm and let him ease into the discussion.

Looking straight into my eyes from across our small dinner table Austin stretched his hand to me.

“Honey I love you so much…” he said.

I was not expecting those words, well not like he said them. The words cut too deep and I knew he was serious as the words penetrated through me. It was as if someone was saying it to me for the first time.

“I really do love you Thandiwe and I don’t want to lose you…” he said.

I sighed heavily and was about to speak but he continued.

“I got you a promise ring, a promise ring is symbolic of a promise till forever, it is not an engagement ring so don’t be freaked out” he giggled as he removed the ring from his pocket.

I looked at him and smiled, I knew exactly what he meant and honestly with how I felt about him even an engagement ring would not freak me out. I loved him and the more we spent time together the more he assured me of his love.

“Honey…” Austin said as he opened the ring box and decided to slip the cute ring on my finger.

Yes the ring looked nothing like an engagement ring rather it resembled a cute girlie fashion ring. I was glad because then I wouldn’t have to hide from anybody. Austin did not kneel down and I figured you don’t need to do that if it is just a fashion ring.

“I love you honey and I will keep the promise” I said.

Austin was quiet as he held my hand and admired the ring he had just put on my finger. Now there was no need for him and I to address the issue I had, he had promised and even put a ring to seal the promise of us standing by each other. I loved him even more for doing that. We watched the sun set and eventually the stars form as we sipped on our wine, I had taken two glasses and I did it in the slowest way possible.

“Should we go to bed now?” he asked

My heart skipped as I imagined what would happen next but I calmly replied.

“Yes honey its getting chilly out here”
