GETTING THEM 35
GETTING THEM 35
Thanking all the doctors and waving
goodbye, I walked out of the hospital feeling refreshed and like a whole new
being. I was so glad Thokozile found someone to take me home and not herself as
I could imagine her reaction if she saw where I stay. Thokozile was very busy
that particular day and I could imagine it was because she had a lot to do at
her saloon, it was the following day after I saw her with the minister and I
was still wondering how she knew him.
“This way madam” the driver said to me as
I stepped out the hospital.
The man was kind enough to carry all my
other luggage which consisted of two dresses which Thokozile had brought for me
to change, they were maxi dresses with tags to show they were brand new, I
understand she got them from a boutique at Manda hill mall. I did not know if
Thokozile was ever going to see me again but I was glad she was kind enough to
help me get treatment. I know at this point she had found out about my abortion
but I could not allow myself imagine what she thought of me.
“Where exactly are we
going madam?” the driver asked “Kalingalinga” I quickly replied.
The man was gentle, he opened the door for
me and let me settle in well before starting the engine, he was quiet for the
rest of trip until he needed to know exactly where we would be making a turn.
“Oh and madam Thokozile asked that I give
you this envelope and you can call her to confirm you have received” he said.
We were packed outside the old gate for
the flat I rented, as a matter of fact it was not a flat but small rooms packed
in one fence that most people in low income status rented. I was so ashamed but
the driver did not even seem to look at the place. He patiently waited for me
to open the envelope and call Thokozile to confirm that I got the envelope
sealed. The envelope was thick and I imagined there was money but I still just
opened quietly and patiently. Like I thought the envelope had a bunch of money
and I later picked a note which read
“I may not know much about who you are or
where you are from but I just wanted to let you know that in you I have found a
sister and I am so glad I could have someone I call family. I equally do not
have family and maybe one day we will have time to discuss that. My number is
listed below, you can feel free to call or not, I deliberately did not drop you
home because I do not want to impose myself on you. I would be so glad to meet
you again and maybe this time in better set up where we can sit and chat. I am
so sorry we have not managed to get leads to your sister yet but the other
number listed below is for the ambassadors secretary who will keep you posted
on what is happening. You can always use it if you wish just to have a view of
how far they have gone in the search for your sister. There is a K1,000 here,
it is not much but I hope you can make use of it. Have a blessed day.”
