RENTED LIFE 3

As the bus wheeled into the intercity bus terminus, Kuni said a quick prayer asking the Lord to guide her through this next chapter of her life. Butterflies filled her tummy as the anxiety built up, her phone begun to ring. It was Aaliyah on the line and she was just in time, Kuni anxiously waited in queue as everyone alighted, it was then that she got a chance to call and ask after her luggage. Just like he had promised, her luggage was safe in the office and all she needed to do was pick it up.

 

“Kuni..!!!” Aaliyah excitedly waved

 

It was such an emotional moment to finally see her best friend after over a year since they left school. Kuni had been in touch with Aaliyah all along and it was her best friends dream that they could finally reunite. The day was finally here. Aaliyah seemed to have been living a comfortable life as she was glowing beautifully, although they always kept in touch, something felt like they had not related in ages. They hugged so tightly with a few teary giggles.

 

“You look and smell amazing” Kuni said

 

“Oh stop…you’re making me blush”

 

“No, I’m serious… you look gorgeous” Kuni added

 

“Huh… look at you.. save me the compliments and let’s get your luggage”

 

The two headed to the office while Kuni explained her predicament which she told no one about, it was very funny that Aaliyah couldn’t help but laugh. Aaliyah was also quick to point out that not all officer are that kind and maybe the one who helped Kuni was just interested in her. She brushed it off quickly with a giggle and they got their luggage and left. Aaliyah booked a ride on her phone to take them to her apartment, all this was new and strange to Kuni who could not explain what was going on. The ride was smooth and quite a distance from the station but it eventually came to a stop when the taxi drove into well built apartments. As the taxi pulled over, Kuni looked at Aaliyah with many question but Aaliyah smiled and whispered “I will explain” . After paying off the taxi man, they took out the luggage and walked into one of the apartments. There was an awkward silence as Kuni dragged her suitcase into the 2 bedroomed glamorous condo. Everything about the place had a touch of glam. 

 

“where do I take my case?” She asked wonderingly 

 

Aaliyah was behind her closing the door and she did not hear.

 

Kuni was lost in the interior décor of the place, from the crystal clear white marble floors to the very light grey walls and the high pvc ceilings with a huge silver and crystal chandelier that reflected on the black stained glass dining table, everything was too much to take in. At last she looked to her left and noticed the blue velvet sofas with white scatter cushions and beautiful blue and white curtains that draped from the ceiling down to the floor. The 60 inch plasma screen was effortlessly mounted on the wall with no cable in sight making her wonder if it even worked. Everything just seemed different and way too sophisticated. And now the million dollar question came to mind before her friend finally caught up with her. What was she really doing for a living?

 

“Oh let’s go straight my friend, you have a whole room to yourself we won’t be bothering each other” she giggled.

 

Kuni was so speechless that she felt so lost and intimidated by this whole experience, she had been in touch with her friend all along but not once did she mention that she was living such an extravagant life. The two were together in school and she not once remembered her friend mentioning that she was well off, yes she came from the urban area but her lifestyle then still did not seem as exaggerated as what she was looking at.

 

Walking into what seemed like a five start lodging experience, Kuni breathed in the amazing fragrance of freshly washed linen and the authentic smell of finely cleaned spaces.  The sheets were completely white on her queen sized bed which had six pillows, two side lamps on the bedside cupboards, a large art piece above her bed of a beautiful red rose and right opposite her was a 48 inch tv just right next to the large window covered with rose gold draping curtains. Below the tv was a beautiful white tv stand with a little surprise, on the stand was a framed photo of Aaliyah and herself in college.  She was so moved upon seeing it and she smiled in disbelief.

 

“Best friend… you still have this picture?” 

 

“Of course… where did you think I would take it?” She giggled 

 

“This room is beautiful, I don’t think I will ever want to leave” Kuni said in amazement 

 

“Well that’s great then we are stuck together forever” Aaliyah said with a giggle

 

Kuni had not yet noticed the door to her left that led to a small walk in closet where there was enough room for her to change and do her make up. All this was still shocking but she was sure they would have enough time to discuss how all this came about.  However, Aaliyah didn’t have much time, she was rushing to work and needed to show Kuni around.
