LIKE FINE WINE 29
Enesie walked into the office looking very fresh and her
perfume scent left the entire foyer smelling good. Clad in a baby pink figure
hugging dress and her hair for the first time hanging on her shoulders, it was
clear to see a lot had changed. Enesie looked happy, she looked loved and
pampered. Although she did a clean nude makeup look, she made sure she wore
well defined lashes that made her look even more pretty. The pink dress was matched
with a a short sleeved white jacket and white Bottega stilettos, she looked
elegant. Her office looked as pretty as she
left it and she quickly put her white hermes bag away before settling on her
seat and begun to say a short prayer. Thoko swung the door open but Enesie did
not pose her prayer, she finished her silent prayer and raised her head to look
at Thoko who seemed excited to see her.
“How are you my love? Welcome back… “
Enesies heart skipped but she smiled and thanked Thoko for
the welcome, she went on further to explain that she was well rested.
“I see, well we have a meeting for programs soon then I will
come so we catch up..”
As Thoko hurried on, Enesie could sense something was wrong
as Thoko didn’t seem her lively self and her greetings didn’t seem genuine.
Walking into the meeting, Enesie felt some tension around every staff she
passed by, it’s almost as if their greetings were not genuine and like
everybody was so concerned about her return. Suddenly, everyone was friendly in
a way which did not make sense. The meeting was brief, the Director addressed
the new targets for the month and working promptly and diligently before he excused
himself to leave the departments to have their own meetings. The programmers
stated they would remain in that boardroom while Enesie’s supervisor indicated
that their meeting would be later in the day as he had something to attend to
in the morning. However, as they were walking out, he stopped Enesie and asked
her to follow him.
“Good morning sir” Enesie greeted with a smile as she took a
sit.
“good morning.. Enesie.. Alex messed up the financial report
we have a damage control to do this morning…” he said straight to the point as
he settled in his chair.
“Oh no.. I hope it’s not terrible..”
“it is and everybody has been mad and that your friend Thoko
.. Enesie I know we have had this conversation before but this time it is
serious. Thoko is not your friend, Thoko wanted you fired as a matter of fact
she is still pushing this agenda”
Enesie smiled before interrupting “sir.. I know Thoko can be
a little over ambitious when it comes to work but have me fired? How and why?
Because of a report that was messed up in my absense?”
At the back of her mind, Enesie was hoping this was not
true.
“go ad see the HR manager.. he wants to see you”
ENESIE’S POV
I swung in my chair as I kept swiping the pictures left to
right, my whole life was messed, I had made the biggest mistake of my life
because of one foolish decision in Milan. For this job I prayed, for this opportunity
I fasted and just when I was getting near to my promotion I was facing this. I
could not stop thinking about the HR’s words. He could not help me, he tried
but the board of directors chose the reputation of the organisation over me.. Our
images were leaked, tabloids were talking and I had not even seen this on
social media yet. I was mad, mad at life, mad at myself, how could I let this
happen? Elisha’s was a ministers son? When and how? I could not even cry and
neither could I tell Elisha. Where would I start from? I was given exactly a
month to close up my files and the organisation was kind enough to pay my
benefits. The HR mentioned that the decision seemed final but unless otherwise
the programs Director might push in luck.
Suddenly, there was a knock on my door. I had no idea who
was knocking but I did not bother to sit up right.
“come in”
The director of pragrams walked into my office with an
envelope, it was then that I put my phone aside and sat upright.
“Enesie, I know how sudden this has come but when you are
good at something, nothing can stop you. I know there’s a big door waiting for
you somewhere”
My heart shutter d hearing those words
“you have outgrown this place. You came here young and naΓ―ve
but look at you.. spread your wings my dear and fly. God is by your side” he
said.
My director had been so good, he understood me and he saw my
vision come to life in the finance department. He fought to see to it that I
managed to install all systems that were halting the quick flow of enemies, I
gained enemies but a lot of trust by the organisation. Many policies were implemented
because of all my efforts, but here I was, damn, stupid and just for a moment I
lost it all. The director handed me a letter where management had thanked me
for my service and that I had a month to clear up my desk. The rest of that day
I sat in that same position, I could not even have my lunch. Thoko did not
return to see me but I could hear her chatting and laughing with other staff.
I couldn’t drive home immediately after work, I had been
back home for a week already and Elisha was only coming in the country that
day. We had been in touch but I had no intensions of continuing our escapades
in Zambia. Well until I got the letter from work. I wanted to look Thoko in the
face but I still had a month to do it. I had no intensions of seeing Elisha when
he arrived even though he had insisted that he wanted me at the airport. He
last sent me a message in south Africa before his connect flight to zambia. I
made up my mind and I drove to the airport that evening humming a sad tune and
trying not to cry. I was mad that I was even going to the airport to see him
when he was the reason all this was happening.
I did not realise how I had fallen into deep sleep but I
remember being woken up by a gentleman I had spoken to earlier as I got to the
airport. He sat next to me and he too was waiting for somebody. The gentleman
mentioned that the flight was going to be landing in a few minutes. I had a little
stretch and thanked him before picking my bag and the roses and champagne I
bought on my way to the airport. I really didn’t have to buy anything but I
did. For all that it was worth, I was not failing at this too. That week since
I returned, Elisha and I talked every day and night. We made video calls many
hours a day. It’s like I was still in Milan.
Elisha had earlier told me that only his best friend would be
at the airport and I soon spotted him, we shared a few pleasantries before
Elisha came, his daughters best friend running for her father and Elisha hurrying
to hug me tight while his daughter looked on excitedly. Elisha looked good and
he smelt good. In his arms I felt safe, our lips locking In long a passionate kiss
was not what I expected. I didn’t see this coming but in that moment I knew, I
had more than I had lost.
“I love you Enesie” he whispered
“…but” I mumbled
“I know it.. I really do love you Enesie”
“at last!!!” I heard his daughter shout in the back ground
before I slipped away from him. I was so embarrassed
Emily came to hug me tight while Elisha hugged his best
friend. Shortly her best friend joined in the hug. I didn’t know what to call
this moment but it was everything. It seemed I did not only have a man, I also
had two best friends.
