CHAPTER 12

Aunty Grace had just walked into my apartment when she asked to use the bathroom; I figured she was just so filled on the tea she had been taking all night. When Jeff left I stayed alone for three hours before aunty Grace arrived. I was so glad she came as I was beginning to lose my mind with everything happening around me. My condition was stable but I had to spend another night and we left the following morning. A part of me hoped Jeff would pick us but he instead sent his driver to pick us. I was a little disappointed but still grateful I was not left alone. The driver did not come empty handed, he came with a lot of things that Jeff had sent through and aunty was shocked but said nothing, well not just yet.

I finished putting everything in the house with the help of Jeffs driver when aunty finally came to peep inquisitively.

“He said he will call you after his meeting, he is having an important meeting at the office” the driver said before leaving

My aunt looked at me in a shocked way before she continued peeping through the plastics. Jeff had got so many groceries that it was hard to hide from aunty Grace when she finally asked …

“Is this from our in-law?”

“Yes” I responded calmly as I tried to avoid eye contact.

Quickly I started packing up the fridge and pantry, this man gad bought so much that some things I had to put in my bedroom to save some space in my pantry.Aunty Grace was very quiet and I quickly offered her a sandwich as I concluded packing up everything.

“You need to rest, it is me to serve you” she said.

“Awe I am okay now” I said as I joined her in my small living room.

There was an awkward silence as I scrolled the tv remote looking for something to watch.

“Aunty… now that I feel better… can I at least travel to Luanshya” I asked

“Well no… I don’t think it is a good idea… they are burying today… we will go there when all has well passed… look my baby… lets not think about Luanshya for now… let us focus on you being well and everything else will fall into place… one step at a time” she said.

I nodded my head and focused on the television. A loud ring on my phone threw me out of my short nap that I did not realize I had fallen into.

“Honey how are you…”

I rubbed the sleep off my eyes as I turned my phone to be sure who was calling although the voice was as clear as could be. I could not act any more awkward as I was going to draw auntys attention.

“I am fine…” I responded.

Jeff took a deep sigh before he asked how aunty was doing.

“She is fine..”

I caught aunty look at me swiftly before she focused on the tv screen again.

“I will be coming to see how you are doing this evening… the office is just so busy but I will be there… take care and I love you” he said before hanging up.

I was shocked but even more convinced Jeff had some screws missing in his head, that afternoon I kept thinking about that call and just praying to God Jeff would not show up because I had no idea how I was going to tell aunty everything. I knew she eventually needed to know but at least I needed to tell her before she could ask. Well the day seemed to be going very well and aunty and I had a little chat before I decided to bath and have some rest, this was after aunty cooked very nice nshima. I had been trying to follow the funeral on facebook as it was being recorded live but aunty decided that I should not watch. We were both quite emotional and just barely holding up knowing mum was being to put rest. I lay on my bed and immediately feel asleep. It had been two hours later when aunty quietly opened my door but I sensed her presence and woke up.

“Ba tata came a long time we have just been chatting, he did not want to disturb you… he is in the living room” she said.

I gasped in shock… Jeff was crazy indeed. I was so embarrassed and had no idea what to say to aunty but she seemed quite unbothered that he had come. As a matter of fact she seemed happy.

“My daughter, you chose very well… this one will unify our family” she added
