(INTRODUCTION)

“What am I doing here?” I asked as I tried to move.

I was weak and dehydrated but I knew a drop of water in my mouth would have me throwing up, my worst nightmare seemed to have finally come flashing right before my eyes. I knew I was in a hospital; I knew it would eventually come to this someday. Even though I was not yet aware of my surrounding, I could smell medicine and that was a giving. I had only managed to stare at the ceiling for a spilt second before my eyes closed again, this time very conscious except I couldn’t stand the light. Footsteps neared my bedside and I opened my eyes again; she was fair in complexion and very beautiful. Everything went blurred again and I struggled to look at her properly.

“What exactly were you taking and why?” she asked

“Vodka” I replied with a bitter taste in my mouth. The vodka was having its effect.

“You just answered one question” the lady calmly replied.

I managed to open my eyes and attempted to lift my right arm to block some light, all this just so I could get a clear glimpse of her. She was clad in a blue doctor’s uniform; I saw her smile before I felt pain in my arm.

“Keep your hand down, you are on a drip” she said as she helped lower my hand in place.

“Why did you drink so much?” she asked

My eyes were closed again and I could only think of one logical answer.

“I was trying to kill myself”

“And your baby…” she interrupted.

“Baby!” I exclaimed trying to get up but falling right back.

“I thought as much, you don’t know… well … a little more responsibility will be required in your alcohol consumption. I will request quitting completely as it is not safe for your baby. You are fine for now but you need a lot of rest, some food for you and the precious one and also… you will be booked in for antenatal as soon as possible”

The Doctor removed the stethoscope from her neck and wrote a prescription which she put by my bedside.

“A nurse will be coming in here to explain the rest” she said
