CHAPTER 17

“I will not force you to do anything but circumstances will… I am just going to make you an offer and with this offer I expect you to go and enjoy this money quietly. I know a very good doctor…”

“Don’t you dare… I will never abort my babies!!!”

Mrs. Cloud burst out laughing.

“Look at you, what are you trying to prove? Look Jeff is a boy… little boy… he is very irrational in his decisions… my dear what has he promised you? Let me hear it… because I can certainly assure you that you will remember my offer… and your job honey… you know I can have you out at any point but I am not going to do that… I am making you an offer… a car, a flat in your name… ok a house in your name… a vacation to Dubai and capital to start whatever you want… on one condition… disappear from our lives… look here dear, even if you stay.. the chances that Jeff will live up to any promises he has made you are very similar as a matter of fact zero… by the way… Connie has also been sleeping with Jeff are you aware? Look there’s nothing I do not know about my brother… he is a ladies’ man…” she chuckled.

The waiter soon returned with the food, he first of all came with the nshima and dry fish and begun to serve Mrs. Cloud but she quickly stopped him.

“This is her food… are you crazy?”

The waiter looked confused but I said nothing. He served me the nshima and dry fish and went back to get the Asian dish which he quickly served her and she begun to eat. I was quiet the whole time as I imagined what my life would be like… I could not go back to Luanshya, I had to look for a new job while pregnant… I had actually been trying to get a job since I joined Cloud investments but teaching jobs don’t come easily. How would I survive… I also had Jeff to worry about… what if she was right? I thought of so many things at that point but I needed to be brave, I had watched way too many movies that this right here felt like one. Even if I lost everything, I was willing to confront Jeff and let him know that his sister had told me all this nonsense.

“I have heard you loud and clear…” I said

“Good, so when do you want to see the doctor? We can simply call Jeff and let him know that you felt unwell.. that is not now of course but maybe tomorrow.. the doctor will do everything and by the time you get there we can simply say it was a miscarriage. You have between now and tomorrow to decide” she said.

I was ready to get up and leave but Jeff came, my heart ached upon seeing him that I was ready to burst into tears. I wanted to yell on top of my voice but I instead washed my hands and decided to indulge in the dry fish and nshima. It was actually nice but I had pains swallowing as his sister smiled at me. 

“Babe… you are craving nshima today.. I am surprised” he said.

“Actually she was so lucky there is nshima here..” his sister interrupted.

Jeff washed his hands and joined me in eating the food, Mrs cloud ate a little and reminded Jeff she had an appointment hence she needed to leave. However, she did not leave without coming up with a big lie.

“Actually Jeff, your lady and I have a tea date tomorrow.. I told her that I want to show her some nurseries... excuse her from work just for tomorrow. Please….” She said with a smile.

“I knew you two would soon be up to mischief, no worries, its fine she can miss work… can I come along?” he asked

“No men... lady date” she said.

Mrs. Cloud waved and winked before she left, I was so surprised this lady was so certain I would go ahead with the plan. When she was out of sight I looked at Jeff and smiled as I began washing my hands.

“Honey you are full already?” he asked. 

“Full? Jeff what do you and your family take me for?’ I asked in a serious tone

Jeff looked shocked.
