GETTING THEM 13

GETTING THEM 13

Lumbiwe had been gone for a short period only when I decided to send her message and tell her that I was going to manage by myself. It was easy to pass this message as she complained when packing up, she had no idea who would be with me and she insisted she would have gone with me if she could. Lumbiwe quickly called me and asked if I was sure as she would still find somebody if I didn’t mind. Upon insisting she thanked me and assured she would be in touch, likewise I had to call her if any needed her attention.

Mr Chalwe had still not received my response, after his last message I went quiet and he sent another asking if I was asleep but I kept quiet. It was the following morning now and I know he needed me to confirm. Looking at the time it was only 7pm and I decided to wait until 8am before I could get in touch. To my surprise Mr Chalwe called just a while later and he was keen on hearing my response. He however was also concerned that he was being pushy and was ready to draw back.

“No I actually fell asleep” I said as held my bedding up to my chest. Something about this phone call felt like the first time I had a crush on a boy.

“Oh… I figured… so... what do you think?” he asked.

I was speechless and still not wanting to say more I held back until he went on with how beautiful it would be if I did not mind.

“I would love to but I just feel Samfya is too far for now and I am just worried about long distances I am not a person who loves the road and….”

“So we fly then?” he asked.

I felt something in my tummy overturn and I sat upright, what was he talking about? Fly? Fly to where? Why all of a sudden? I knew if I wanted this man to continue treating me like he was I had to act natural in this circumstance. Being with Kalanje taught me that one had to fit in; I had to fit in in order for this to last, I wasn’t supposed to be denying these things otherwise I would teach him how to treat me.

“I have never flown before” I said openly

He sighed and said the most calming thing I have ever heard anyone ever say to me… “There’s always a first time because queens deserve the best” he said.

I could not deny this once in a life time opportunity but I needed some sense, I had to confide in someone but I did not really have friends. Well the only friend I could think of was Kalanje but he was obviously unavailable for such talk. Mr Chalwe asked when he could meet me for a meal and if that evening would be. Without much hesitation I agreed to meet him at Manda hill mall that evening. I felt so calm about this friendship and no part of me felt like I had to change anything. Mr Chalwe was moving on a pace that seemed quite steady for me. As the day progressed I received a message from Litase. Apparently the girls were going to be having a braai over the weekend and if I didn’t mind I could join them. I hardly knew them apart from our encounter the previous day, they said I could come with my friend if I didn’t mind.
