GETTING THEM 6
GETTING THEM 6
The week that
followed, i went to school to pay the fees which I had pending. Although I was
not paying school fees, I was supposed to pay user fees which my sister had
signed for but we were lagging. There wasn’t much the school could do for me
and often times I got asked how I could not even manage to pay user fees by the
head that was not quite remorseful. He would let me stay in school but still
would not let me get away with anything. I needed to make some sort of
commitment. Many times I felt like I burdened my sister but I couldn’t do much,
she was taking care of me and I knew she had her own needs too.
The school was
busy as always, everyone was going about their business and the administration
was quite open empty than before. A few people walked in with consultations and
left. The receptionist asked if I wanted to see the Head but because I was
already clearing my balance, there was no need of seeing him.
“You will have
to wait for him for some time”
“No I just want
to go into accounts… I have come to clear my balance” I said.
It was common
every other term for me to go and explain myself at the accounts office and
this was something almost every teacher knew. It was no surprise I was
different but I did try to fit in a lot.
“The whole
balance? You need to clear it all if you are to get your result” she bluntly
stated.
“Yes the whole
amount” i replied confidently.
The receptionist
made a quick call then asked me to proceed to accounts. Usually, a very
unpleasant and unwelcoming face was the first you would see as you entered the
accounts office. I was sure this was what awaited me as I headed there but to
my surprise Mrs Kawama was no longer there.
“Good morning
dear” a man of about 30 years or older greeted me.
He was charming
with a very convincing smile.
“Morning sir… I
came to clear my fees my name is…”
Before I could
finish he asked me to sit and handed me a document which had a short list of
pupils who owed the school. I could tell even before going through it that the
list was not from my intake.
“Sir I did not
complete last year” I said.
“ok… when did
you complete dear?’ he asked.
“The year before
last” I said.
He lowered his reading glasses before asking what I thought would be
his next question. “What took you so long?”
Let's see how it unfolds
