RENTED LIFE 17

Kuni returned to bed while the maid worked around the house, her heart was heavy; she cried bitterly that morning asking God what she could ever do right. They had lost everything and she did not have money yet. She needed to report the following week for work and only then would she get her settling allowance. It was surprising that Simon had not been in touch but Kuni did not have the energy to update on everything that was happening with her, it felt strange to be letting him what was happening in her life so early in their relationship.

Meanwhile, Simon was resting in his office chair. He had reported very early that day and was ready to meet the worst. They had a meeting that morning with their partners and it was time to know their fate. Business had drastically gone down and the investors had since lost confidence in them that pulling out was inevitable. It was unlike Simon to be that worries, he faced all of life’s challenges with courage but something about letting his family down felt like the biggest failure he would ever encounter. It had been long since he ever said a serious prayer but the moment sitting in his chair, he swung around hoping to get an answer from God.

“You know I have tried my God… there’s nothing I have not done to ensure this company does not run down. My parents had serious confidence in me, I cannot put them through this”

Tears lingered in his eyes as he looked at his parents’ photo on the wall across him.

“I am so sorry I have disappointed you… I sacrificed everything I could, even my own salary”

There was a knock on the door and Simon knew it was to walk into the meeting, words failed him, what if there was no coming back from here? At this point it was better if the investors wanted to enter into a partnership and co-run the company. Obviously, a lot of things were going to change but it was better than them pulling away completely. It meant everything put in would be lost.

“Come in”

Salome opened the door and signaled that it was time… Simon sighed heavily acknowledging he heard her before dismissing her with his eyes.

“it’s time Lord” he said.

There was something about leaving his office chair that felt like he was not going to return there with as much authority as before. One last look and he finally walked out. As he closed his office door, Simon was ready to face whatsoever it is that came his way. Kuni crossed his mind but she was the last person he wanted to focus on.

The hallway leading to the boardroom was cold and uncomforting, Simon remembered his childhood visiting his father’s office and being taken round. A lot had changed, a modern feel was added to it; thanks to himself. He had sacrificed a lot for the company and giving it all up would mean a great change in his life that he was not ready to adapt to. Finally, standing before the tinted glass doors of boardroom, Simon too a very heavy sigh and then pushed the door open. My Ying was seated with his managers and all of them seemed to be eager for the tough discussion.

“Good afternoon gentlemen” Simon greeted as he offered himself a seat.

“I hope you have all had some water or drink” he added.

“Good afternoon... no that won’t be necessary” Mr. Ying quickly responded as he began to open his diary.

Simon was slightly nervous but took up the mantle in his hands and opened the meeting. It wasn’t long before he made his opening remarks that Mr Ying came in straight to the point.
