AREN’T THEY ALL? 2

Nicholas was able to have his hand long enough in his pocket to slide the ring out without Katongo noticing, she had just looked his direction when he said Halo. Normally, Katongo would never respond to a male stranger she would instead go about her own business but for some unknown reason we responded and hurried on. Nicholas was not bout to let this opportunity pass him and he ran after her.

“Sir, I a trying to get home as soon as I can” katongo said as she noticed his presence.

“I am not trying to stop you, we can walk together”

Katongo ignored him as shee walked on.

“It’s my first time here, there’s no electricity home so I came here and a goddess walked my direction. I was thinking how did I get so lucky…”

Katongo was irritated but she continued walking without a word.

“Can I please know your name at least”

Katongo was still quiet and she did not bother to flinch, her aim was to get home and have a warm shower. Work had been stressful.

“You know what? I’ve actually seen you before, I normally see you leaving your work and today I thought I follow you but clearly I failed terribly” he said.

Katongo stopped to look at him but she got more anxious about getting home. It was not too far away, home was a kilometer away but she was concerned as she knew little about this guy. Kayandas words now rung in her head. “Try dating now.. not all men are the same” Kayanda was her housemate.

“I am rushing home and I wish I could wait but if I see you again I will be certain this was fate and then I might just give you my number. Goodbye for today” katongo said before she rushed away.

Nicholas was determined to know her place so he watched her walk but Katongo was clever enough to know he would try to spot her, so instead she went on ahead and then peeped from a tuckshop nearby. Thinking he had gine,  Katongo exited and headed home. Nicholas however was not new to this so he had waited long enough to see her move out and finally spotted her location, judging from the place she came from, he was sure she was struggling to make ends meet but he did not care.

Katongo lived in a shared house with her friends from high school, the house accommodated all three although it only had one bedroom. They were all struggling to make ends meet but they made the most of what they had. Once in a while Katongo went home to see her parents in garden compound, the house was very small but was housing 8 people. She had to separate herself to at least leave enough room for the rest. At least she had done her secondary schools and was now raising money for college. However, even after working for 5years the money had never been enough. At least something positive came out of this, Katongo was able to afford a decent meal for herself and her family every month. She also helped her father meet school fees for two of her siblings.

Nicholas got home earlier than usual, he no longer had interest in watching the match because he had found himself a treasure he had not seen in any other woman apart from his wife. Upon arriving home with two large boxes of pizza and some chocolate for his wife, Christina exclaimed.

“Honey where is your ring!!”

He had just put the items on the kitchen counter and scratching his short beard when his wife noticed his ring finger was empty

Nicholas gasped as he quickly put his thoughts together.

“Goodness Christina I just got home, how about asking how my day was? I just removed it as I helped sombody change his tyre. It was messy situation, are you not surprised I’m back early? I do not even watch soccer”

Christina smiled and walked to her husband to give him a peck on his lips.

“I love you honey.. sorry I just got shocked … I know you honey.. I know you my love”

Nicholas sighed before leaving his wife’s presence to rest on his bed.

“Honey come we have dinner…” Christina begged.

“I can’t believe you don’t trust me” Nicholas replied.

“Its not like that my love”

Nicholas refused to have dinner, he said he wanted to rest. While he lay on his bed, he stared at the ceiling and made pictures of Katongo. She was so beautiful.
