LIKE FINE WINE 9

Just to be sure, Enesie stayed three more days in South Africa but the covid certificate delayed even further. Thandi was no longer being pushy but often gave her cousin a side eye when they were together, it was clear she was stating her point. In the evening of the third day while the two had supper, Thandi brought the conversation up. This time she avoided being straight to the point but instead opted to ask Enesie about her work.

“So how long is your leave?”

Enesie sighed as she stubbed a folk through the pasta. She was not in any way interested to proceed with the conversation. She was seconds from leaving the dinner table when Thandi apologised.

“I’m sorry. I was just being concerned”

Thandi left the table for the kitchen to dish herself some more pasta. It was the first time she was having penne in mushroom sauce with slices of ham, thanks to chef Enesie who did the honors. Thandi was glad to have her cousin over as South Africa was ever lonely, family was too far for her but her job paid really well. Sending money home every month for her siblings to complete school was always comforting and a boost of energy to stay there. She was saving her family from poverty. A scholarship had saved her and now it was time for her to save somebody else. Although she did not come from a privileged background; Thandi was blessed to have aunty Samantha, Enesies mum. She had taken care of her fees through primary and secondary, her brains then earned her a scholarship.

On Ethiopian airlines, it was all fun and relaxed as Elisha conversed with June. It was interesting to come across a lady so learned and could articulate herself so we’ll on many issues. June did not only hold a Masters in Human resource management but she also had a Masters in business administration and a bachelor’s in law. Elisha was ecstatic, what were the odds? It’s not always that you bump into someone who is in the same field but also interested in similar things. June was also a loner for most of her career shaped life, she was either working or having wine and relaxing. The cycle was the same, it was also strange to learn that she too had started going for golf classes just to mingle.

“Well, what is it that isn’t alike between us?” Elisha said with a giggle

“ I guess the fact that I’m not a parent..”

“Ya that..” Elisha smiled as he looked at his daughter across. She was deeply involved in the conversation with her friend but like she knew her father was looking at her, she looked in his direction and smiled.

“You have a beautiful daughter” June said.

Elisha looking at her nodded and smiled. “Thank you so much, I try to be a good dad”

“Well I think you are doing the best, you are taking her on vacation to Italy before college. You are a great dad..”

Elisha looked at June this time with a lot of attention and noticed just how beautiful she was, in that moment he appreciated life. He was in his forties, a great career, a beautiful intelligent daughter, his dream home back in Zambia and on a plane to Milan where he would be in a five start hotel and now he was on a plane with one of the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, they had a great conversation and would hopefully exchange numbers later. Life was indeed good.

It was 3 more days later and Enesie had just managed to book her flight after a bit of struggle. Thandi had booked her flight earlier that day while Enesie was asleep, the two had agreed to book their flights first thing in the morning but Enesie being Enesie waited for mid day to book. This was much to Thandi's disappointment as she feared they would be on different flights. But luckily she got it done and they were going to be on the same flight. The trip was in two days and now they had to start packing.

“So, this same friend of yours who will host us without a name. How well do you know her?” Enesie asked as she curled up on the couch next to her cousin.

“She has a name, she’s June and yes of course I know her very well. We shared an apartment when she was doing her master’s degree here. She’s a good person and she’s Zambian”
